Antique furniture of the Middle-Age style is in fact made up of several styles that have evolved through the times. One can underline some characteristic features
The Roman period – The principal characteristic of this style is, as in architecture, the use of the half-circle. Simple decors appear, and embellish the pieces of furniture. The piece of furniture has a utility function (chest of jewels, beds, thick tables). The use of wrought iron strap hinges is gradually abandoned for more discrete techniques (tenons and mortises). Soon, in the XVème century, new decors appear: crosses, rosettes, stars, circles, etc ...
The Gothic period – One meets three successive styles of Gothic, especially in the panels of trunks or the woodworks of separation between rooms:
Primitive Gothic: Characterized by the intersecting ribs and the use of sober and simple forms
Radiant Gothic: To the preceding style come to be added naturalist ornaments
Blazing Gothic: Use of nervous interlacing, complex layerings
New pieces of furniture make their appearance, such as the combined metal plaque or pieces of furniture (wardrobe with storage trunk)
