After the death of Louis XVI, the style slightly evolves. The principal character of the Directory period is the return of ancient decors (columns, flêches, feathers). With those are added unusual animals: swans, lyons’legs, chimères.
The seats have a leaning back, of which the higher part is rolled backwards. The back feet are simple and square, "à l’étrusque", while the front feet are close to the Louis XVI style. One sees the appearance of the lions’ legs
The Consulate is characterized by the domination of decors inspired by Egypt and the 1798-1801 expedition. The mahogany tree, especially in veneer, is much employed, or sometimes imitated. Sphinges and winged lions are common
